A gift of appreciated securities such as stocks, mutual funds, and bonds can provide attractive benefits for the donor. An outright gift of long-term appreciated securities (securities held for more than a year) avoids capital gains taxes and in most cases, the donor obtains a charitable income tax deduction equal to the market value of the securities. For information about transferring stock, contact: Diane Carabello
If you would like to transfer the stock by wire to The Legal Centers broker, Kevin Kopp at Salomon Smith Barney, we will provide you with their phone number and any other information the broker needs. Of if you would like to transfer the stock within your brokers firm, The Legal Center will open an account at that firm. Once the account is open, you will need to give instructions to your broker to transfer the stock to the new account.
Bequests
Bequests are fully deductible from estate taxes for the amount of a cash bequest or the market value of other assets donated. The gift can be a share of the residue of your estate, or it can be an outright gift or in a trust.
Assets including cash, securities, and tangible personal property, such as works of art, may be transferred to The Center for Legal Advocacy (the corporate legal name of The Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People) through your estate.
There are three popular ways to direct your bequest to The Legal Center.
The Percentage Bequest
Suggested wording: I give (state percentage amount) to Center for Legal Advocacy, a qualified 501( c ) (3) charitable institution, located at 455 Sherman Street, #130, Denver, CO 80203 to be used for its general purposes."
Specific Bequest
Suggested wording: I give (state amount or asset) to Center for Legal Advocacy, a qualified 501( c ) (3) charitable institution, located at 455 Sherman Street, #130, Denver, CO 80203 to be used for its general purposes."
Residuary Bequest
Suggested wording: "I give (all, or state percentages or shares) of the residuum of my estate, which I may own or be entitled to at my death to Center for Legal Advocacy, a qualified 501( c ) (3) charitable institution, located at 455 Sherman Street, #130, Denver, CO 80203 to be used for its general purposes."
Trusts
A trust is a planned gift designed to benefit both you and The Legal Center. Along with an immediate charitable tax deduction, you can assure an income back to yourself for life. After that we can use the remaining funds to help people with disabilities and older people. To consider the best trust vehicle for you, we recommend that you consult with legal and financial counsel.
Gifts of Real Estate, Life Insurance and Endowed Funds
These gifts are accepted within policies approved by The Legal Centers Board of Directors.
